What would ten more hours on task each week do for achievement?

One day of practical, research-based strategies that teachers start using in their next class period.

Why this training

Why schools book this training

Academics and discipline cannot be separated. Low-level behavior takes instruction time all day, and even the strongest content teacher cannot deliver a lesson in a room that is out of control.

The strategies in this training reduce or eliminate 70 to 90% of low-level, chronic behaviors. Teachers get time back and feel more effective, and that matters for retention: classroom management is the number one reason educators leave.

Research

"Teachers' actions in their classrooms have twice the impact on student achievement as school policies regarding curriculum, assessment, staff collegiality, and community involvement."

Marzano, R. J. (2003). What Works in Schools. ASCD.
The five components

One day, five components

The training models each strategy and gives teachers time to practice it.

Component One

Self-control strategies

Teachers practice the diffuser system and the teaching power position. Both are about prevention, which can head off up to 90% of low-level problems before instruction stops.

Component Two

Teaching rules and procedures

Successful teachers do not post rules and hope. They teach expectations with a lesson-plan format and practice them until they stick, which cuts office referrals and builds buy-in from staff, students, and parents.

Component Three

Responding to challenges

Five seconds is the target. With the diffuser system and a supportive stance, teachers end most confrontations in that time without raising their voices.

Component Four

Classroom ecology and arrangement

Fifteen desk arrangements, and when to use each one. Teachers also learn where to stand so challenges are less likely to start.

Component Five

Student-teacher relationships

The hardest students are usually the ones who most need a connection. This component shows teachers how to build it and how to bring non-compliant students into the work of the class.

Agenda

A typical training day

In person on your campus, as a full day or a half-day, whenever your calendar allows.

Teachers start at 8:30 AM with the classroom itself: a calm mindset, room design, the teaching power position, and fifteen desk arrangements. Rules and procedures close the morning at 12:00 PM.

Lunch runs from 12:00 to 1:00 PM. Between 1:00 and 3:30 PM, teachers learn to carry out discipline firmly but fairly, build relationships, connect with non-compliant students, regain control in five steps, and stop giving repeated warnings.
